Aside from conserving materials, new ones are also being created through 3D printing. The most vivid example of that perhaps is the work of Neri Oxman in MIT Media lab in collaboration with Object on the Minotaur Head with Lamella project (below), [http://web.media.mit.edu/~neri/site/projects/lamella/lamella.html], where nature’s process of creating materials is expressed by the analysis and recreation of anatomical and physiological data of a human skull, implemented through the combination of soft and hard materials.
Implementing the material properties in the function of a printed object is a core drive for new design possibilities. During a 3D Print Show, which occurred in central London in October 2012, several objects with functions revolving around their material properties were displayed. It is most certainly an interesting issue to be researched in detail throughout this thesis project.
