Problem Statement and Research Overview
When it comes to additive manufacturing the three main questions are regarding materials, scale and application. These will be discussed and investigated with the help of Finite Element Analysis and 3D modelling/printing.
One thing is noticeable, while there exist early forms of layering - as slip-form construction or brick layering for example, the construction industry has still not implemented 3DP very extensively, for reasons which will be discussed in the following thesis project. Hence, a key problem to be analyzed is what the foreseeable application of 3D printing in the construction industry is. What's more, speculations will be made regarding design possibilities in other industries, and social impact.
Furthermore, the main inspirations behind this research project (or also a further break-down of the key issues surrounding 3DP) are the digital “intelligence” of printers, biomimicry, efficiency of structures, use of materials, and the future scale and development of rapid prototyping from both technological and social point of view.
